Chinese Cinema Doesn’t Need a “Ring-Fence”
This summer, moviegoers in China will not be able to see new Hollywood blockbusters such as Ice Age: Collision Course (《冰川时代:星际碰撞》), the fifth installment in the Ice Age film series, Steven Spielberg’s The BFG (《吹梦巨人》), or Illumination’s The Secret Life of Pets (《爱宠大机密》). These films may be released here later in the year, but for now, there is a summer “ring-fence” around Chinese cinemas and only Chinese films are encouraged to be shown.
This exclusion of foreign films during the summer months (and over the New Year holiday as well) isn’t new and it isn’t official government policy. It has just become an accepted way to promote Chinese films. Recently, some Chinese theater owners think the “ring-fence” is no longer necessary and may even be harming China’s film industry.
Gao Jun, a film industry spokesman, says, “I’m afraid that the restrictions will have adverse effects on consumption ... The more domestic movies are protected, the less box office revenues (收益) that are generated  in our market will increase.” Although  it’s fine that more Chinese films can be screened in cinemas, not all of the films released during summer holidays are of high quality and people won’t pay money to see them. Since part of the ticket price is used to support Chinese films, the loss of revenue will hurt the industry as a whole.
China’s film industry is maturing rapidly. Last year, its box office revenues were almost seven billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 40 percent over the year before. And seven out of the top ten films last year were Chinese made. The problem is that hasn’t translated into international success.
However, some changes may take place. The Wanda Group (万达集团) wants to bring Chinese cinema to the world. They’ve bought a chain of movie theaters in America and an American film company. A big movie production studio has also been built in Shandong. Their hope is to rival Hollywood some day.
With all that happening, perhaps it’s time for the “ring-fence” to be taken down. Shen Qiaowen of the Wharton School of Business (沃顿商学院) in America thinks so. Shen says, “China’s audience will one day be bigger than the U.S. Competition doesn’t kill local movies. They don’t need protection.”
