Shanghai Disneyland to Boost Economic Growth
The first-ever Disneyland in mainland China, which officially opened to the public last Thursday, appears to be doing quite well amid the country’s economic slowdown. Tickets for the first two weeks were sold out soon after they became available in March.
In fact, the 3.9-square-kilometer resort (度假胜地) has been greeted with extraordinary enthusiasm since April 26, when a nearby metro station started operation. Although the theme park is mainly targeting people living within a three-hour drive, analysts say it will attract over 30 million visitors a year and accumulate up to 90 billion yuan from them. They estimate that the profit of Shanghai’s tourism industry will triple (增至三倍) thanks to the resort.
“Chinese consumers are spending more and more,” said Shaun Rein, a senior market researcher. “Every person with a kid or grandkid in China is going to go to Shanghai Disneyland as long as the theme park is big enough and good enough.”
Shanghai Disneyland, however, is expected to not only boost tourism, but also bring positive effects to the city’s other business sectors, including real estate, retailing (零售业), catering (餐饮服务) and transportation.
Sitting at the core of the emerging Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone (上海国际旅游度假区), in the center of Pudong District, Shanghai Disney- land was designed as a major part of the city’s initiative to steer (引导) its economy away from manu- facturing and towards services.
“Some retailers are trying to benefit from the Disney project,” said Rein. “They are hoping that as long as travelers are in this part of suburban Shanghai, they will include some shopping to make the trip more worthwhile.”
Real estate in the area is booming, too. Prices in nearby housing developments (新建住宅区) have surged by up to 35 percent, according  to Mingtiandi, a real estate research firm.
Meanwhile, Shanghai Disneyland has created 10,000 new jobs. They don’t require “particular experience or background” as long as the potential employees have a “friendly and open personality” that would fit into the theme park’s culture.
